Frequently Asked Questions
Osteopathy is a regulated primary healthcare profession that focuses on how the body moves, functions and adapts. Osteopaths use hands-on assessment and treatment, alongside clinical reasoning, to support comfort, mobility and physical function.
Osteopathy also considers relevant factors such as posture, work demands, movement habits and daily activities that may be contributing to symptoms.
No. You can book an osteopathy appointment directly without a GP referral.
If you plan to claim through private medical insurance, your insurer may require a referral, so it’s best to check with them in advance.
Your first appointment usually includes:
- A detailed conversation about your symptoms and health history
- Discussion of relevant lifestyle, work or activity factors
- A hands-on assessment of movement and areas related to your concern
Where appropriate, and if there is enough time, treatment may also be included during the first
appointment.
Everything is explained as we go, and you’re encouraged to ask questions at any point. Any examination or treatment only takes place with your consent.
You will never be asked to undress fully.
For a thorough osteopathic assessment, it’s often helpful to see and assess the body directly. This allows observation of posture, movement, skin changes, scars and areas of tension that aren’t always visible through clothing.
Most people are asked to dress down to their underwear. If you’re more comfortable, shorts and a vest or strappy top are absolutely fine.
Your comfort, dignity and privacy are always respected. What you wear is discussed beforehand, and you’re encouraged to let me know if you’d prefer to adapt anything. Any assessment or treatment only takes place with your consent.
Most people find osteopathic treatment comfortable and often relieving.
Some techniques may feel unfamiliar, but treatment is always adapted to you. If something doesn’t feel right, you can say so at any time — your feedback matters.
People commonly seek osteopathy for:
- Back, neck, shoulder, foot, elbow, knee pain
- Joint or muscle stiffness
- Postural or work-related strain
- Repetitive strain issues
- Sports-related discomfort
- Headaches linked to neck tension
Osteopathy isn’t a cure-all, but many people find it helps them move more comfortably and better understand what their body has been responding to.
Yes. Osteopathy in the UK is regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).
All practising osteopaths must be registered with the GOsC, meet strict education standards, follow professional practice standards, and maintain their skills through ongoing professional development.
This varies from person to person.
Some people notice improvement after one appointment, while others benefit from a short course of care. We’ll discuss expectations and options together after your first visit, based on your situation and goals.
Yes. Osteopathy can be appropriate for people of all ages.
Treatment is always adapted to the individual, taking into account age, health history and current needs. Under 18 year olds need an appropriate adult with them.
Some insurers cover osteopathic treatment.
If you plan to claim, please check with your insurer in advance to confirm their requirements, I do not deal with insurers directly.
